Castle-themed VBS in Spain

Serving with OC in Spain, the Eller family recently led their Spanish church youth group on a short-term project to host Vacation Bible School (VBS) at a nearby small village church. The neighborhood children were so excited to see the visiting young people. Laura tells the story: “Each day as our group would pull into La Caleta de Velez, the children came running out. Some had been waiting for hours, and all continued to wait anxiously in the windows and doors of the church until we ‘opened’ up for our VBS outreach in the afternoon.

“We transformed the church building into a castle (complete with drawbridge in the entrance designed by our son Josh). As we shared about life in the kingdom, we talked about the armor that God gives us in Ephesians. Most of the kids had never heard a Bible story. They ate it up.

“La Caleta had a church – but all of its congregation, except one couple, left in the past year or so. Our church decided to join together with them, and now through evangelism, relationship building, kids’ club and women’s groups, we hope to see a church grow up again. We are excited to be part of it. There were several women from the church there at VBS, learning how to work with kids, and who will carry on what we started during our outreach week.

That day, we had one parent say that she would come to church the next Sunday to see what it is like! And lots of kids have already signed up for the ongoing kids’ club where they will continue to learn about the Bible and God’s love for them.

“For our youth group, it was a great experience to serve. They also learned new ways to work with children, to share the gospel and how to teach different games. It strengthened the group that was there, and gave them a passion for reaching out to others in the community. We’re so grateful for the opportunity to have been part of what God is doing in La Caleta.”
