Teaching in Ethiopia – a Story in Pictures

Even though he left Africa many years ago, Bob continues to travel there periodically as part of his ministry with Near Frontiers (an OC ministry, formerly called OC USA). From a recent trip to teach and train future leaders in Africa, Bob shares photos and thoughts from his time. “God gave our training team an excellent time of ministry. As always, it is a toss-up as to who ministered to whom. I think the Ethiopians out-blessed us again!” says Bob.

“The church buildings in which we hold training are simple but adequate. The host pastors seem happy to welcome us.”

“During teaching times the students are rather solemn… But worship and prayer are freestyle!”

“On my first visit six years ago, I was privileged to lead Alazar to the Lord. I was delighted to meet up with him again, and learn that he is still walking with Christ. He works with a Chinese family that owns a restaurant. I had a fantastic meal with them. We are praying they may hear and understand the good news of Jesus.”

Near Frontiers“We held graduations in three of the cities in which we train. There were approximately 200 graduates from the two year diploma program… The graduates are pledging faithfulness to God’s Word and the training they have received.”

“When I teach on missions I bring pictures of the unreached people groups of Ethiopia and challenge students to become part of bringing the gospel to them.”

“In one city, I called for students to come forward for prayer if they believed God was calling them to cross-cultural missions. Twenty four of 59 came forward. A powerful time of prayer ensued!”

“Thank you for joining in partnership in my ministry. The main focus of Near Frontiers (a One Challenge ministry) is reaching the diaspora in the U.S., but these trips outside remind us that God is at work globally.”

“There is a great man in this picture and it’s not me. This brother has done mission to the Somalis and nearly lost his life doing it. I am humbled to know the likes of him.”

“Vision Leadership Institute is the dream of Dr. Girma Desalegne, who pastors a church in Seattle. I met him 10 years ago, and am privileged to know and partner with him.”

Pray with One Challenge

  • Pray for Bob and his ministry in both the U.S. and across the continent of Africa.
  • Pray for the recent graduates from these programs, that they will remain faithful to the Lord and that they will have impact in their communities.
  • Pray for the unreached people groups in Ethiopia, that the Lord would raise up workers to share the gospel with these groups.
