PEP: an Opportunity to be Heard

One Challenge’s commitment to care for its mission workers is an essential part of its DNA. Beyond one-on-one care, pastoral care, and other care provided by the MemberCare department, the larger OC family comes together once a year for a program called Personnel Enrichment Program or more commonly know as PEP.

A Personal Reflection

Workers come to PEP usually about once every four years, so it’s a different group each year; some big, some small. PEP could be explained in many ways, but here is one woman’s perspective on the program:

My name is Kelli…, and I’ve been involved in PEP for about 15 years. You might think, “wow, that’s a long time,” but when I tell you it’s been half my life, I think that kind of puts it into perspective. I’m not including the two times I’ve participated in PEP as a mission worker’s kid, once as a 7 year old and once as a 12 year old. So maybe that’s 17 years.

PEP

Why have I committed literally half my summers of living to this program? The importance of giving people the opportunity to share what’s on their hearts: the struggles, the joys, the pain, the triumphs, all in a safe place with people who have walked a similar journey before. It’s that simple.

PEP

For One Challenge, it’s the opportunity to be in fellowship with workers you may only see once every four years, but can pick up friendships in a minute. It’s a time of fun, silly games, performances, and campfires but it’s also a time to dive into the Word and be renewed in the Spirit. It’s a time to be heard. How many of us, mono-cultural and multi-cultural alike, get the opportunity to have someone’s undivided attention for a period of time? That’s the primary purpose of PEP, to feel valued and heard.

PEP

One thing I’ve realized: not every mission organization does this. It’s unique. So, here’s my challenge for whoever reads this. Are you a safe place for a mission worker who hasn’t had this opportunity? Ask them to coffee and give them your undivided attention for an hour. Don’t interject, don’t add your own perspective, and don’t try to solve any problems. Just listen and pray.

Pray with One Challenge

  • Pray about the people in your life, whether they are in ministry or not, who you can impact by giving them an opportunity to share their heart.
  • Join us in praying for OC mission workers who are in transition, whether back to their countries after a time away or who are in the U.S. for a period.
  • Pray for the MemberCare Department as they seek better ways to provide care for OC workers globally.
