Encouraging Rural Pastors in Brazil

Sertao PresenteAt One Challenge, we believe serving the body of Christ is best done together. It’s because of this belief, we choose to work alongside ministries and churches in nations around the world. In Brazil, One Challenge workers Douglas and Barbara have journeyed alongside and encouraged a ministry called Sertão Presente. Started by Junior Firmino and his wife Gerlaine, this ministry mobilizes pastors and young people from different churches to take the gospel message into the interior “sertão” regions of Northeast Brazil.

“Sertão Presente invites all the local churches in a small town to come together for training in evangelism, and then a public presentation in the town plaza,” Douglas says.

Sertão Presente emerged as a compassionate response to the needs of many rural pastors and leaders who felt isolated and neglected in small towns without much encouragement. Located in the dry desert-like Sertão region of northeast Brazil, these leaders serve in communities with less than 5% active Christians.

Ministry of Encouragement

Douglas and Barbara have journeyed alongside leaders and workers of Sertão Presente for the last three years. They go on these trips in order to encourage the pastors and leaders of these rural churches.

“Leaders from larger urbans churches often don’t understand the challenges these rural pastors face in terms of religious opposition and financial hardships,” Douglas says. “Providing ministry tools in the form of a book or helping leaders set their priorities go a long way to encourage these leaders in simple ways.”

Pray with One Challenge

Serving pastors and leaders is a big part of OC’s ministry philosophy in Brazil. “We understand that encouraging national leaders like Junior Firmino and Gerlaine, and at the same time getting directly involved in training leaders through Sertão Presente, contributes toward taking the gospel to the ends of the earth,” Douglas says.

  • Pray for more national initiatives and for the resources to fund these kind of grass roots ministries like Sertão Presente.
  • Pray for Douglas and Barbara and other leaders to be encouraged and strengthened.

Leadership Development

We are committed to the equipping of leaders, inside and outside the church, with kingdom principles allowing them to move entire people groups toward transformation, hope and justice. We believe in supporting national ministries and national mission workers that we serve alongside to share the Gospel and to make disciples. We have fun doing it too!
