New Beginnings in Italy

New. What comes to mind when you read that word? Is it excitement? Trepidation? Longing? Dread? For many the idea of “new” means a paradox of feelings, a mixture of loss and hope.

After living and serving in Romania, Mihai and Tammy are off to a new field, a new ministry, and new opportunities to walk in obedience to the Lord. “New” for this couple means Italy.

Saying ‘Goodbye’ to Saying ‘Hello’

Late 2018, Mihai and Tammy said their official goodbyes in Romania, packed up their lives, and drove to Italy, eagerly anticipating life and ministry there.

“It is with heavy, yet joyful, hearts that we say goodbye to the Romanian chapter in our ministry lives. We are proud of our legacy in Romania and that we have been able to hand the baton to national leaders that we both mentored and empowered to carry on ministries that we cultivated,” Mihai says.

Although their chapter in Romania has come to an end, they both share a commitment to the continent of Europe, Mihai serving in Romania for nearly 20 years and Tammy serving in both Spain and Romania.

“God loves (Italy) and (Europe) deeply and with abandon. We desire to serve God in this place by offering ourselves to God’s people in expressions of care and formation that will build up the body of Christ and generate a transformed people,” Mihai says.

Settling In

The lighthouse “la lanterna” in Italian is the symbol of Genoa and the image we want to use for our ministry. Matthew 5:16 is our new theme verse!

God’s path for them is beginning to develop in their new home. “We are thankful for Italy and the warm welcome and invitation we have received from the evangelical alliance, ministry leaders, and local pastors,” Mihai says.

Over the last months, Mihai and Tammy prepared for the move, not only in packing and goodbyes, but by beginning lessons in Italian as well. They are also excited to learn more about the culture.

“We are discovering new ways to love our new home every day,” Mihai says. “Our prayers for the people, places, and stories of Italy, especially Genoa, grow deeper with every new experience. God is at work here, in us and around us!”

Pray with One Challenge

  • Pray for Mihai and Tammy as they adapt and transition to their new environment. Pray God would make clear the areas where he wants them to serve.
  • Pray for a movement of the Spirit in Italy. According to Operation World, just over 1% of people in Italy identify as Evangelical Christians. There is great need to help the Italian church mature, grow, and reach out.
  • Praise the Lord for the developing relationships between some church leaders and Mihai and Tammy. Pray for these relationships to grow and develop into God-centered partnerships.
