OC Guiding Principles: Creativity & Learning

Our identity and purpose as an agency is summarized in our vision, mission and strategy statements. Our organizational culture is captured in our guiding principles. This is the essence of One Challenge, and it is finding expression in countries around the globe.

Here we describe two of our six guiding principles: creativity and learning.

Finding our inspiration in God, we value innovative risk-taking and experience freedom in his grace.

What OC Creativity Looks Like:

With this guiding principle in mind, what does a traditional disciple making movement do when a country shuts down due to a global pandemic? Go online, of course!

In the Philippines, Discovery Bible Studies shifted to a purely online format, allowing Filipinos with even the smallest amount of cell phone data to access online group chats. With barriers removed, more people groups have access to discipleship and Bible teaching. Also, with training, believers are being empowered to reach beyond their communities, share the gospel, and disciple one another. Leaders have even worked out a way to perform baptisms through a group chat! Even after the end of COVID, online Discovery Bible Studies via group chat are here to stay.

We are lifelong learners who seek to grow in competency as we serve the body of Christ in its context and intentionally mentor, coach, and disciple one another.

What OC Learning Looks Like:

In April, just over 80 OC leaders and workers participated in the virtual 2021 OC Learning Conference. Using different methods of adult learning and dialogue education, participants journeyed through five modules – from understanding the current volatile, uncertain, complex, and ambiguous context to focusing on outcomes vs. outputs.

In addition to the “live” conference, in order for OC workers to continue to apply learning and grow in ministry, One Challenge worked with a Christian association of coaches to provide a coach and coaching sessions for all participants. Although learning happens in many contexts on ministry fields, the 2021 OC Learning Conference represents the guiding principle of lifelong learning in a structured format.

Holistic Ministry One Challenge is an international agency committed to bringing God’s transforming love and hope to all people. We identify and work to meet the physical, emotional, and social needs of individuals and communities, providing opportunities for deeper level relationships and deeper levels of change. These ministries include education, medical services, agricultural development, community development, and small business mentoring … helping local people to build a healthy community is one of our guiding principles.

Leadership Development One Challenge is an international mission sending agency empowering local church ministry in more than 100 countries around the world. We are committed to the equipping of leaders, inside and outside the church, with kingdom principles allowing them to move entire people groups toward transformation, hope and justice. Those leaders in turn can mentor others, and together we all bring God’s transformation to lives, communities, and nations.

  • Stan Nussbaum says:

Prayer is appreciated in my current struggle to get more people to adapt any of my “new ways to tell the old story” so gospel communication becomes more potent in their context. Two advisers (not OC people) recently suggested that I’m not getting many takers yet because the work requires more creativity than most mission workers have. Since OC has creativity as a core value, perhaps some of us could step up to tackle this? See at Thanks for your prayers, and welcome if you wish to try this out.

    • JEFFREY NELSON says:

Good you put up this challenge. I ask your prayers for our church and how our Shepherding team could be brought to what you have put together as a model for samll groups. I meet with them Saturday. There is somany options on the table and I seek to identify with them a criteria from our Lord (authority) on which to base our leading the church.
