Listening to God: Episode 3 (Martha & Mary)

Each episode in the series will include a reading of the Bible passage, about 3 short concept videos (like mini lessons from the Bible passage), and a prayer exercise focusing on a Psalm that you can use as a “listening practice”.

Episode 3: Listening to God as We Serve

In Episode 3 in our Listening to God series, we will explore the two ways of serving (Mary & Martha). Martha, Mary and Lazarus have always been some of my favorite people in the Gospels because of their relationship with Jesus. We can name the disciples, Mary and Joseph (the human parents of Jesus), and the Romans who had power. We don’t know the names of many of the people in the crowds or the extra followers of Jesus, but we do know these three — Lazarus and his sisters, Martha and Mary. The fact that we know their names makes them significant.

Teaching Concept 1 – The 2 Ways of Serving

Teaching Concept 2 – God is working in both sisters’ lives, Jesus loves them both

Teaching Concept 3 – Jesus invites us into his rest… the better way to listen

Prayer Exercise – Matthew 11:25-30

The concept of showing hospitality by being and doing was helpful. My thought would be to get the doing done before guests arrives so that as a host I can be with my guests listening and interacting, while they are present. Being and listening are closely related and involve such things as eye contact, concentration on what the other party is saying, and asking good questions. Being and listening while praying are not easy. Mary was silent listening to Jesus. I need to be more like Mary. (I wonder what Mary was thinking while Martha addressed Jesus? I think Jesus’ reply put her at ease.)
